Lexington mayor going to the well

Lexington, so far, doesn’t have a water shortage – and the mayor wants to keep it that way.

Mayor David Montgomery wants to buy the rights to water from private wells that can produce at least 35 gallons a minute and pump it into the public water system operated by the Lexington Water Authority.

“You can never have too many wells,” Montgomery said.

People living in the Oglethorpe County city have a lot of private wells, he said – the trick is finding one that has a high enough flow and meets state Environmental Protection Division location regulations.The wells can’t be too close to livestock pastures, and in rural Oglethorpe County, that’s not an easy find, Montgomery said.
