LULA – Lula is moving forward on a pair of very different projects: a waste treatment facility and a Veterans Park.

Five years in the making, the city is ready to ask companies to bid on the construction of its waste treatment facility.

“We had to go through the North Metro (Metropolitan North Georgia Water District) audit. We had to get financing that has been approved through GEFA (the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority). We had to get EPD (Georgia Environmental Protection Division) approval for our permitting and engineering,” Mayor Milton Turner said of the events leading up to the bidding process.

Turner estimates that the city council will be ready to award the bid within about 45 days.

“We’re ready to break ground as soon as we can get bids out and they come back competitive,” he said.

The city is also getting ready to break ground on its Veterans Park. The project is already out for bid, and Turner estimates that the council will award the project to a company within the next 60 days.

The council previously discussed holding the groundbreaking ceremony on Veterans Day, and at its monthly meeting on Monday council members unanimously agreed to do so.

“We’re going to do it on the eleventh day of the eleventh month at the eleventh hour,” Turner said.
