The Georgia Conservancy on Wednesday named former Georgia Lt. Gov. Pierre Howard interim director.

He starts Jan. 1 to replace Jim Stokes, who earlier this month announced plans to retire from the environmental organization at the end of 2008.

Recently, Howard served as a senior fellow in the University of Georgia’s School of Ecology faculty. He spent 18 years as a Georgia state senator and served a term as lieutenant governor. He also was a member of the Board of Natural Resources and board chair of the Nature Conservancy.

In January 2009, the Georgia Conservancy Board of Trustees will start its formal search for a new president. The search is expected to take about six months.
